Greetings, cherished community! Today, I want to share some thoughts inspired by my current reading of “Humility” by Andrew Murray. Originally written in 1895 and remastered in 2001, this thought-provoking book, recommended by one of my mentors, has illustrated that there is nothing new under the sun. What is considered old can be made new again, whether through a book or the transformation of our lives. This short, yet deep book has made me rethink the way I live my life and whether I truly exemplify what it means to be humble.
Understanding Humility
According to Murray, humility is “the displacement of self by the enthronement of God—where God is all, and self is nothing.” This powerful concept teaches that dying to one’s self is not our work to accomplish, but God’s work. Once we turn our lives over to God, we are dead to sin, and our lives have undergone a process of death and resurrection. However, the full manifestation of this power depends on how the Holy Spirit imparts the power of Christ’s death into us.
We must place ourselves before God in utter helplessness, content heartily to the reality of our inability to change ourselves, sinking into our nothingness with a spirit of meek, patient, and trustful surrender to God. It is through this death to self that humility is perfected.
The Illusion of Doctrinal Truth
In our world today, the illusion that doctrinal truth equates to righteousness is pervasive. We often encounter what Francis Frangipane aptly describes as “religious flesh”—a fixation on appearances and rules rather than genuine heart transformation. This manifests in critical judgments, superficial piety, defensive stances on beliefs, and a resistance to change. These behaviors distort the true essence of spiritual life, focusing more on self-righteousness than on the greatness of God.
My Personal Journey
In my own journey, the call to die to self is a call to surrender wholly to God’s will. It is not about diminishing oneself, but about letting go of ego and personal desires to allow God’s spirit to lead. This shift from being self-centered to other-centered means more patience, less judgment, and a greater focus on serving others without expecting anything in return.
As I continue to embrace this path, I expect to see changes in my own life—less reactivity to criticism, less need for recognition, and a deeper sense of peace and satisfaction. These are not just theoretical changes; they are real, observable transformations that signify the dying of the old self and the flourishing of a life aligned with divine humility.
